Archaeological Complex of Moray

It is located 57 km northwest of the city of Cusco.

Moray is made up of 4 slightly elliptical galleries, which the inhabitants call "muyus". The largest gallery has a depth of 45 m and the average height of each platform is 1.80 m. For researchers, Moray's circular platforms functioned as an agricultural research center, where each level offered a different climate environment allowing different plants to be grown experimentally. The platforms were built on retaining walls filled with fertile land. He watered them through complex irrigation systems. At the bottom of the platforms, there is a system that stores the water coming from the rains. Following this practice, more than 250 plant species were cultivated. Other studies indicate that the place was used for astronomical observation and to monitor the climatic changes that could occur, by monitoring the sunlight and the shadows generated by the high mountains in the area. The  Salt mines of Maras have an impressive complex of salt exploitation, it is located in the place called Qoripujio, at a distance of approximately 4 km, with respect to the town of Maras. Location of the Moray archaeological group
Moray is located 53 km from Cusco, has an altitude of 3,385 meters above sea level.

At approximately 7 km. to the southwest of Maras is Moray which is a unique archaeological group of its kind within the region. Moray is a center of depressions or gigantic natural holes which were used to build (in its contours) terraces or agricultural platforms with their respective irrigation channels. What is important in the place and therefore attracts a lot of attention is the average annual temperature difference between the top and the bottom of the depressions, that difference reaches up to 15 ° C.
The main hole has a depth of 150 m. and the average height of the platforms is 1.80 m. among them.
The structures found in Moray are typically Incas, however, some suggest that these are earlier structures; This can be noticed mainly in the lower terraces.
